7 Study Habits of Highly Effective Students

chroniclesofalazyteenager:

So yesterday, I went to a talk for incoming DLSU and UPM freshmen at the Maynilad Study Center near V. Cruz. The talk was all about these 7 study habits you should develop in order to become effective students.

Our speaker was a graduate of DLSU and is now CPA who goes by the name “DJ”, which I thought was kinda funny ‘coz I have a friend of the same name studying Accountancy in UPD.

Anywaaaay, just thought I’d share the things he said with y’all. Who knows? It might come in handy for you someday ;)

1. Go back to your basics

  • Why do we study? Some say they study to get good grades, others say its because they want a high paying job later on in the career. But the basic reason why we study is because we want to learn. We study to gain new knowledge that will help us not only in our career, but for the rest of our lives as well.

2. Make your daily tactics

  • Create a schedule and stick to it. If your not fond of following a strict schedule, at least make a to-do list of everything you need to accomplish for the day, and make sure that you do them. Make plans and act on them.
  • Do not fall for the illusion of “free time” As a freshman, it may seem that you have tons of free time on your hands, but if you don’t know how to manage your time properly, you may be left cramming for something that you should’ve done a long time ago.

3. Take smart notes

  • Your profs’ lectures are the main conduit of learning when you’re in college. Be sure to develop good listening and note-taking skills, but try not to write a novel. Also, don’t take down the lecture word for word, look for the key words and principles and take those down instead.

4. DO NOT Multitask

  • When you multitask, your focus and attention is split between your tasks. This is less efficient because instead of focusing on one subject, you constantly switch to doing different things, and you will end up getting everything just half-done. Remember, multitasking your schoolwork leads to multifailure.

5. Go out of your way

  •  It’s good for you to study your textbooks, but don’t stop there. Text book knowledge is simply not enough. Stay updated with the news concerning your field, talk to those with experience and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions means you’re internalizing and thinking about the topic at hand.

6. Take time for rest and enjoyment

  • All work and no play turns us into work-aholic robots. Give yourself a break once in a while. Take Sundays off. Take a nap. Relax yourself. Sleep at the right times and keep to the normal circadian rhythm of your body. You wake up more relaxed the earlier you sleep compared to sleeping the same duration, but later in the night.

7. Study with a friend.

  • Studying with other people enhances your social skills. Without those skills, you won’t get anywhere in life. Friendship adds flavor to studying. Instead of studying all alone, you’ll have someone to talk to, someone to exchange ideas and opinions about the topic.
  • Be sure to limit your study group to about 2-3 people though. Any more than that and you’ll have an unproductive goof-off with your friends at your hands.
  • Oh yeah, and don’t go to a group study empty-handed. By that, I mean you should all brush up on the topic before you get together, or else, it would just be like blind leading the blind and you won’t get anywhere.

. There you have it! The 7 Study Habits of Highly Effective Students. I sincerely thank anyone and everyone who took the time to read until the end. Thank you! Hope this helps you somewhat. Hahaha.
